Journalism/Photojournalism

Position: Volunteer/Intern
Location: Kathmandu, Nepal
Enrollment: Round the year
Salary: Unpaid

 

You can go into the field as an assignmentreporter, to cover the stories or photo stories around the country. You can spend time working the news desk. Or you can serve as an assistant editor.  

You will work 5-7 hour days, depending on media type and assignment. Hours may vary per assignment. (Intern can work as part time or full time as their interest).

 News Room.   

You retain all rights to your own photographs. Publications reserve the right to use your photos in your assigned publication; however the images will be otherwise used through your permission only. 

You will be working with one of the journalists/photojournalists employed by the media and as a photo journalism intern your assignments will be news or photo stories. 

Intern/volunteer’s Daily Schedule:                                                                                                           
1. Depending on the daily happenings in and around Katmandu, interns will follow a senior journalist to various events to take photos.
A list of common events is as follows:
(a) press conferences 
(b) important activities attended by VIP of the country ie. Army Day or a Cultural performance
(c) arrival of VIPs from foreign countries 
(d) cultural events/ festivals going on in Kathmandu
(e) demonstrations or rallies taking place in Kathmandu
(f) interviews with general public

 2.  The intern will then return to the news office to upload their photos of choice to be sent to the news editing group.  Interns will also be required to write captions for their photos.

3. Interns have the option of writing photo features /news features which will be published on the website/publication. Naturally, there are no restrictions to the topics chosen and interns are encouraged to write about anything that they have experienced in Nepal.
  
It is also important to note that whilst given the freedom to express their thoughts and views, interns should fully respect the culture and customs of Nepal which may be different to their own.

4. Interns normally work a six- day week, with one day off. They are at liberty to choose the day that they want off. Working hours start from the time of the event (which usually takes place in the afternoon) and ends with the photos being uploaded and published on the website/publication. Interns are expected to produce work daily, with at least one photo a day.  

5. There is no payment for the internship; it is simply to gain the experience and knowledge.

Students may choose from the following options:

reporting, editing, photography in daily, weekly, biweekly or monthly magazines. Students are given assignments with English language publications.
